The different parts of BillMax may operate on one machine or be spread across different machines. It is highly recommended that at a minimum that the BillMax software be installed on a machine behind a firewall. The exception to this is the software needed to run the Customer Interface. It is recommended that this be installed on a machine outside the firewall.
Specific hardware recommendations are difficult to make as it depends on the following:
The number of customers to manage.
What type of architecture is desired - Intel or Sparc.
What other software will be running on the hardware.
Items that affect performance of BillMax, in decreasing importance, are:
Memory - the more memory the server has, the faster BillMax will operate.
Disk speed - the faster the communication and data reads and writes, the faster BillMax will operate.
CPU - the faster the CPU, the faster the BillMax will operate
To put the hardware requirements into perspective, BillMax Billing Solutions is currently operating a benchmark instance of BillMax with the following characteristics:
Size of the BillMax instance
Accounts - over five hundred thousand.
Services - over six hundred thousand.
Financial transactions - Over twenty-two million financial records spanning a year
Hardware - 500 MHz pentium, 50 GB hard drive, 256 MB memory.
Average amount of processing time for closeofday processing (does the daily billing, suspending of Services etc.) - 5.5 hours. Note that this is while the system is available.
A minimal set of hardware for running BillMax might be:
A server for running all the BillMax software with the exception of the the Customer Interface.
A firewall - the same server that is running BillMax could be the firewall, but it isn't recommended.
A server for running the Customer Interface.
If desired, the database might be moved to a separate machine.
